More Frames, More Details

FrameDetails was a project I started while studying at UP.GRADE in Berlin. A common way to learn was to take films into our grading software and, using the built in tools such as vectorscopes and waveforms, analyse the images. That soon got me thinking – wouldn’t it be great to have a library of films, not just collected but also accurately analysed that I could quickly refer to?

And so FrameDetails was born. I found a way to get the information I was seeing in the software out and started to build a library. When I showed it to my fellow UP.GRADERs they loved the idea and want me to share it them. That’s when I started posting the first frames on Instagram. Soon after I realised posting one frame wasn’t enough to properly understand the flow of colour through a film, so the project migrated to tumblr.

As the project grew and developed, both tumblr and Instagram were no longer the right home for FrameDetails. With a facelift and even more details added the project has now found its new home, here.

The plan for the latest iteration is to expand from feature films and also include episodical works, music videos and even showcase a few commercials. I will continue to create this library of images – mostly for my own sake –  and maybe even expand to writing about them. I just hope that others find it useful too.

To understand the images themselves better, take a look at the details.
